Fleet 10k Run

posted 23 Oct 2017, 14:25 by Georgina Kitchener   [ updated 23 Oct 2017, 14:32 ]

In October 2016, Rebecca took part in the Fleet 10k in memory of her son Zachary.

She raised an amazing £1715  for Farnborough Sands and to be used towards the Rowan Suite at Frimley Park Hospital.

This is her and Zachary`s story:

"When Paul and I went for our 20 week scan on April 8th, we had no idea how much our lives would change in the 10 days that followed. We found ourselves helpless and needing the support and guidance from so many medical professionals at both Frimley Park Hospital and the Evelina Hospital London.

No parent should ever need to make the choices we had to make and I want to say a huge thank you for that support and ensure parents going through similar in the future get the chance to have the precious keepsakes and memories we have got from what was such a sad and harrowing time.

I still struggle daily with what we went through and see our little boys perfect face whenever I close my eyes at night or have a moment without distraction. But I take comfort that he will never know pain or suffering and am so proud of the impact he made in our lives for the 22 weeks he was living inside of me. Giving birth to Zachary was the same for me as when we had Olivia, but this time we weren't bringing a baby home, just a memory box."

The Rowan Suite was set up by the Farnborough Sands charity and is a dedicated place of sanctuary and comfort for parents and families that are going through the loss of a baby during pregnancy, birth, through medical complications or loss after birth.

The Suite provides a 'home away from home' with a bedroom and nursery where parents can spend some precious time with their angel before saying their last goodbye.

The Suite also needs funds for moses baskets designed for small babies, cooling mat machines, and various upkeep of the suite as sadly it is in use frequently.

Sands also provide parents with memory boxes consisting of a memory book, teddy's one for parents and one for baby, photographs, footprint/handprint cards, support books and a candle. These boxes cost an average of £15 so we are looking to raise money to ensure any parents that unfortunately will need use of the Rowan Suite will have those precious memories to take away with them and cherish forever.

Raffle and Cake Sale

On Friday 13th October I held a cake sale and raffle at my work place, ACAL BFI in Wokingham, to mark Baby Loss Awareness week, and to raise money for Farnborough Sands, in Memory of my son Henry, who we lost back in April due to a pregnancy complication.
We had many prizes donated by various places, Coppid Beech Hotel Bracknell, Vue Cinemas Farnborough, Sticky Sisters Restaurant Farborough, Taylor & Co Jewellers in Crowthorne to name a few.  So lots of lovely prizes to tempt my colleagues in to buying tickets!!
On the day, people bought in or made cakes to sell, for a minimum £1 donation.  There were lots of very yummy cakes to taste, and not many left at the end of the day, my colleagues sure do enjoy cake!!

I sold raffle tickets throughout the preceding week and on the day, I don`t think there is anyone in my office that didn`t buy a ticket, or 5!!
The day was a good one, so many people approached me not just to buy tickets but to offer their support and to say sorry about Henry.
The raffle was drawn at 4pm on the Friday afternoon and everyone was excited to see what they had won,  and those who did win were very happy!!

I totted up all the money raised and it came to a staggering £480.45!!  I had sold around 340 raffle tickets, at £1 each and there was over £90 raised just from the cakes!! My company, also very generously offered to donate £100 to Farnborough Sands.

I`m am blown away by my colleagues generosity and support, and so pleased that so much money has been raised and will help to support other bereaved parents.
